He wanted a son. Katherine of Aragon only gave him one daughter and all the rest of the children died. He was convinced a younger woman could give him a son. The pope refused because Philip of Spain was more rich and powerful than Henry.

So Henry started his own church.

Henry VIII was desperate for a male heir. His wife, Catherine of Aragon had only given him a daughter -- a son had died in infancy -- and was becoming too old to bear children. He attempted to get the marriage dissolved on the basis that she had been previously married to his elder brother Arthur who had died soon after the wedding. However, Catherine's uncle Charles V, the Holy Roman Emperor, had a strong hold over the Pope and the Pope refused. When it became apparent that nothing would change the Pope's mind, Henry determined to split from Rome. It had become especially urgent because Henry's lover, Anne Boleyn was pregnant and he wanted to marry her before the birth so that a son would be legitimate.

The split from Rome had a further attraction to Henry. Costly wars and other expenditures had left the royal treasuries empty. The church was the largest and richest land-owner in England and by splitting from the church, Henry could confiscate those lands and their wealth. He gave the lands out to favorites to secure their loyalty while retaining much of the wealth for himself.

First poster is right, but didn't explain it perfectly.

Firstly, henry viii broke away from the roman catholic church, not Rome....

He didn't make an entirely new religion, either. He did it so he could divorce his wife, yes.

He made a new catholic branch, the name of it currently escapes me(I'm agnostic so I don't remember names of religious stuff very well ;))

He wanted to divorce his wife and marry another woman because his wife couldn't get pregnant and produce a male heir for him.

He was married to Catherine of Aragon, who was a Spanish princess who had married his brother by proxy. The brother died before the marriage was consumated and Henry wanted to marry her. The pope argued no, she was his brother's wife and the church at this time considered this incest. Henry argued that the marriage wasn't consumated and that it should be alright to marry her. The pope gave in and allowed him to marry Catherine. She had a daughter with Henry (Mary) and then she couldn't conceive again and Henry lost interest in her.

He decided that he wanted to marry one of her ladies in waiting (Anne Bolyen) and he argued with the pope that he should be able to annul his marriage because Catherine was his brother's wife and the marriage was invalid. The pope said no, the marriage to his brother wasn't consumated and Henry's marriage to Catherine was valid.

So Henry broke with the Catholic Church and established the Church of England so he could divorce his wife and marry her lady in waiting.

Because he wanted to divorse his first wife and marry another which was forbidden by the Roman Catholic church, so he made his own religion that allowed divorse.
