Usually if you audit a class, you are expected to be a full member of the class, or you would hold the others up. Basically, you are like an unofficial member of the class. You sign up; you just don't get a grade.

I don't believe you get a grade for auditing a class, so I don't think you have to do the homework. You will GET more out of the class if you do, of course, but I doubt that you'd have to. They might not even grade your tests(?), but I bet that they would if you asked, since very few people ever bother to audit. You probably don't have to attend any or all of the lectures or labs, but if you don't, then why bother to sign up in the first place?

I think the idea is that you attend the lectures, buy the book if you like, and you're on your own as far as learning anything. I suppose some people might start out auditing a class to try it out without risking a bad grade.

If you have a class in mind, ask the instructor exactly what you have in mind and see what they say.
