This has happened to me so many times, and I don't know if it's really happening or if I'm dreaming...I'll be sleeping and I feel like I need to wake up, but I can't . I try to move, scream but I can't..I struggle and struggle until finally I get awake. Why do I do this?

Could mean that you don't have control of something in your life, and you feel helpless about it.

There are several theories on the subject... it's possible that you're just dreaming. Thinking about waking up won't make you wake up. it's just kinda random when you actually do wake up. Another theory says that your "astral body" or spirit is actually in a spiritual situation which is absolutely plausible, many people that have Out Of Body Experiences say that when they're revived it feels like waking up from the deepest sleep they've ever had. some even report dreams. the one thing you can rule out is that you're actually awake and physically experiencing the situation.

It is just because you are having a nightmare and you are actually aware that it is only a dream while you are having it. This used to happen to me a lot growing up. My secret was to count to three and try as hard as I could to open my eyes. It usually works after one or two goes. Another thing you can do since you are aware that you are dreaming is you could have so much fun with it. Why not try flying or kicking some butt. You have unlimited potential in your dreams and nothing to fear when you know it is only a dream.

Do you have sleep apnea? Or have you ever suspected you have a sleeping disorder? Do you feel out of breath?

Those would be the first things I would find out. I bet you are dreaming, but the dream is being triggered by something. If there is nothing wrong physically, then I would assume the dream is your psyche trying to tell you that you are out of control of something that should be a very simple thing to do. You should be able to wake yourself up at will, but instead you have to struggle and fight. You can't find your voice in the situation to ask for help.

So, I would try to figure out what feels out of your control right now in your life. Find out what you should be able to do, but right now are struggling to accomplish. What is it that you can't find your voice to express that you need help??

This could be as simple as taking a math course that should be a piece of cake, but you can't quite get it. You want to ask for help, but feel silly doing so, or don't know who to ask. Or you are asking for help and no one is hearing you.

That is my dream analysis :)

Ive suffered from the same or something similar a few times in my life...Think it might be something to do with not going through proper stages of sleeping or waking....Dont think its that uncommon ,even got a medical name for it,which i cannot remember...All i know is i get your symptoms exact and maybe a sensation of not breathing..For me it has just happened now and again in my life so it hasn't bothered me ..Apart from unpleasant sleep...If it happens a lot perhaps get yourself checked out..Although i do not think Doctors will or can be much help..

It sounds like sleep paralysis. It happens when the mind wakes up before the body does. I can't tell you what scientific occurence happens to make the body wake up later.

In normal (non sleepwalking) people, when you're asleep, the brain actually paralyzes the body, so that you don't go wandering off a cliff, etc. It sounds like your brain is taking a little longer to unfreeze your body when you do wake up, so it seems like you're still asleep.

Try telling yourself exactly whats happening: "My body is asleep, but my brain is awake".

I've had this happen, and reminding myself that its happening usually keeps me calm.

I do the same thing and sometimes i get really worried that I won't be able to ever fully wake. Normally happens when you are somewhat in a semi sleep state.

It is called sleep paralysis. Sort of in-between being asleep and awake. It is very common and nothing to be worried about.

It sounds like sleep paralysis. I had this problem when I started college. It's exacerbated by stress and sleeping position. Try sleeping on your side and also google sleep paralysis for more info.
