Yes they actually did. Also the Soviet Union sent dogs into space as well. Proving that humans are the dumbest things on planet earth, they didn't want to but still did, we had the foolish idea to shoot ourselves. Hmmm... they had to be forced and we chose to strap ourselves to tons of highly explosive material who is the smarter species dogs and monkeys or humans? Dogs have common sense to bite when being strapped into a highly risky situation humans wave.

Yes. The US space program began with rhesus monkeys back in 1948 in V-2 rockets. All of the moneys in this program died on impact.

On Sept 20, 1951, the US launched another rhesus monkey into high atmospheric flight named Yorrick. He was the first monkey to survive the landing.

Throughout the 1950s, the US continued to use rhesus monkeys, squirrel monkeys, and mice in early flights. During the same period, the Soviet space program was using dogs as test subjects.

Prior to the Mercury-Redstone and Mercury-Atlas manned flights, each of these launch vehicles was tested with a chimpanzee: Ham was the first Redstone astronaut, and Enos the first Atlas passenger. These were both in 1961, paving the way for human astronauts.

They did not try to launch monkeys into space.

They did launch Chimpanzees into space in the early years of the space race.

There is a big difference between the two.

Yes. It's better than other animals, since monkeys and chimps are biologically similar to humans, and react to the environment in a similar way.

People are too expensive, anyway.
