For use in mining, demolition, and construction. Explosives used in those industries before dynamite were prone to accidental explosions. The introduction of dynamite substantially improved safety.

You have a poor understanding of history. Alfred Nobel invented dynamite. He hoped it would be used for peaceful purposes, like demolition of dilapidated buildings, but new it would be exploited for war. He invented the Nobel Peace Prize to promote peace. He never had such a ridiculous thought that dynamite would be an explosive so terrible that it would make war unthinkable. Neither did the guys who invented the machine gun, the airplane, or the atom bomb.

Nitroglycerine had been used for mining at the time because of its power, much better than black gunpowder. But it was very unstable, sensitive to shock and heat, and resulted in many accidents. Nobel's solution was to absorb the nitro with diatomaceous earth, which was then packaged in tubes. It was much, much safer. Sawdust is also used.
