OK, I'm giving away my age here but:
Sixteen Candles - Samantha Baker's (Molly Ringwald) 16th birthday should be perfect and memorable, but her whole family seems preoccupied with her sister's impending wedding and completely forgets Samantha's big day.
Fast Times At Ridgemont High - Cameron Crowe's first cult classic with an allstar cast before they were stars. (Rated R)
The Breakfast Club - How members of different cliques clash during Saturday detention and end up learning about each other and banding together against the principal.
The Goonies - A group of misfir small-town kids discover a pirate treasure map and start on a quest to find the riches. Along the way they battle a family of escaped convicts they happen on and pirate booby traps.
Ferris Bueller's Day Off - A cool day of ditching school. Nuff said.
Stand By Me - You can never go wrong with this one. Trust me.
The Princess Bride - An enchantingly cracked fairy tale including giants, swordsmen, six-fingered counts, murderous princes, Sicilians, pirates, rodents of unusual size and even death which cannot stop true love from triumphing, of course.
Back To The Future - The original. Doc Brown has made a time machine out of a DeLorean that inadvertantly sends Marty back in time. Not only is Marty stuck in the past, but he also risks throwing the time-space continuum for a real loop when he disrupts his parents' destiny. It's a race against time (literally!) to get them to pucker up -- and to get him back to 1985!
I'll stop here... I'm making popcorn and staying up all night ;-)

you don't say what you've been through, but I've been through a lot recently too. physical injury via work then and operation to correct and now recovering and hoping for no permanent nerve damage so I can get my leg back to normal function.
watching TV gets old, but the classic movie stations usually have something good on.
read books, have your friends, co-workers, church drop off a bunch of used books.
The Producers - mel brooks broadway play made into broadway musical, made into movie. starring nathan lane, mathew broderic and uma thurman. an absolute gem!!! will ferrell makes an appearance that will surprise you and have you laughing so hard you'll fall off the couch.
Mr. Brooks - kevin kostner as you have never seen him. suspense, thriller, who dun it. great movie
and when it comes out on on dvd... "across the universe", you MUST see it, especially if you love the Beatles music. This is one persons visual interpretation of their music and put into a story line that is amazing. I love it and will try to see it again at a theatre if at all possible... one more time. I'll have to take the big pain pill to manage it, but it's worth it.

My favorites are by a Spanish director named Pedro Almodovar -- Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, Volver (recently in movies), About My Mother. Also try some oldies like Casablanca or The Maltese Falcon

I suggest seeing movies that have famous acting teams in them. Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy made several movies together and most of them are really good: DESK SET, ADAM'S RIB, GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER, PAT AND MIKE and WOMAN OF THE YEAR.
Humphrey Bogart movies are all pretty good too, like THE MALTESE FALCON, CASABLANCA, THE AFRICAN QUEEN and KEY LARGO. Jimmy Stewart's movies like IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE, MR SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON, HARVEY. Bette Davis in WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE, JEZEBEL, THE NANNY. MOBY DICK and TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD with Gregory Peck. The first two HOME ALONE movies, MY GIRL and THE GOOD SON with Macaulay Culkin. These are a start, but there are hundreds of excellent movies from every point in time. Find movies by the great directors: Billy Wilder, Francis Ford Coppola, Alfred Hitchcock, William Wyler, Robert Wise, Frank Zemeckis, Stephen Spielberg, James Cameron, George Cuckor, Frank Capra, Ron Howard. I could go on and on but you get the idea. Good luck in your pursuit and I hope you find what you're looking for.

Check out the movie channels AMC and TCM. There are some really great flicks (older, but fun) on there all the time. Sure is fun to go back and watch the old movies and see what you miss when there is all that techno-garbage and computer-generated junk out there.
