Next year I'll be applying for a few colleges around this time but I need some help with possible majors and career paths to follow. I love animals but I don't want to be a vet or w/e. I used to want to be a zoologist but I am not sure about all the sciene classes and stuff I would need to take. I love school and teaching and being with kids but I dont know if I'd want to be a teacher or even what level. I also am very interested in television (esp. reality) and would be interested in doing things like decorating sets and stuff (like Big Brother house or Survivor challenges). I am pretty creative and do scrapbooking and stuff. I dont want to be in front of the camera either. I know I want to go to a four year college. Based on my interests, do you have any suggestions of majors that I might be interested in researching more? Thanks!

Visual Merchandising may be a field that might interest you. These are the people that design and lay out themes for big department stores. television set design is a whole other area as is Theatre set design. You need to settle to one path for a while and if that is not what you want then make changes. You are trying to find answers without having put in any actual experience.

research all of the areas you are interested in and see what their requirements for a degree are and what type of jobs you can get with those degrees.

If by the time you get to college you are still undecided, enroll in general studies and take your basic classes while you still research your interests.

As far as your interests: animals, teaching, decorating. Have you thought about working at a zoo? Contact your zoo and see what type of education the keepers had to have to get where they are.

They work with animals, they teach the public about the animals and work with children, and they landscape and decorate the areas where the animals are viewed. Most zoos have special programs where you can go and volunteer with them. This will give you an idea of the type of work involved.

You could study Wildlife Science or Natural Resource Management.

You could also look into land grant schools which usually have a lot of divisions of environmental science. Mine at Rutgers has a special certificate program in Youth Leadership & Environmental Studies.

And with either of these, you could minor in Visual Arts and see how you can pair your interests into a career.
