I know that this type of thing has a name. It can be in any shape but they are usually pine cones. Basically, it's a stone decorative object. I think it starts with a P. Here is one example:

It's not pinnacle but it's like that I think...anyone know?

they aren't pine cones, but pineapples. They are called finials and are used to decorate things like the ends of a banister, tops or columns, or any place you want them. The pineapple form has been popular in architecture and art for several centuries. You will sometimes see them used in fountains, as well.
