African Americans being brought to the United States through the slave trade were thought of as inferior as they were slaves. Even when these men and women became free and escaped to the North, either through running away, buying their freedom, or being freed by their masters, they still faced prejudices. Many Southerners who did not own slaves before the Civil War despised African Americans because they were the lowest of the white class, and thus felt that they must maintain their higher position from the lowest social class in the South: the blacks. Northerner whites, especially those many anti-foreign individuals (the American Party member, for example), and immigrants from Ireland despised African Americans either because of their values or because they took many of the widespread jobs such as in factories, etc.

um they where salves fighting for freedom and the white man was afraid of the balck cuz they where difrent so they dumed them down and maid them slave
