Can anyone tell me if I have to cover a whole (11 #) turkey with foil while roasting it in the oven? I'm not sure if I should cover it for the entire time, just part of the time, or not at all. First time turkey roaster here....

After the turkey has been in the oven awhile parts of the wings, etc. might start to get browner than the rest that's what the foil is for to protect the turkey from getting cooked too much on the top. The safest way to cook a bird the first time is with an oven bag. It comes out really moist and the skin tastes good too. Read the instructions, all of the seasonings go in the bag and the stuffing in the turkey. When its done (the thing pops out) open the bag VERY carefully away from your face! The steam will burn you. Pour the drippings off and you can use them for gravy.

This turkey is going to cook for about 4 hours. Now you have to bast it as well in this time. I would say every 30mins. stay on top of it. Then your last 45 mins you have to take the lid off.
Don't cover completely with foil. Use one of those oven bags. They work so much better.

Buy a Cooking bag to put your turkey in & it will keeo it moist, tender, & well browned which will make great gravy. The bags are in the grocer's section where the foil, etc. are sold. Read the directions well on the box so your turkey will fit in the bag. I stopped making an aluminum foil tent to cover my turkey, years ago. It dryed the turkey out too much.

Start the bird in the oven at 400+ degrees with no foil for the first 30 minutes or so.  Then cover it and lower the temp to 350 until its done.  10 points please!!!!

Don't cover it till it gets a little brown, then put some foil over it. If you like the drumsticks alot ,be careful to cover them good cause they dry out.

Go to the store and buy Reynolds roasting bags. It's simple to use (there are specific instructions in the box), keeps the meat moist, and clean up is easy.

you can cover the tips of the wings and the end of the drumsticks with foil to start , but you want color before you cover it up with foil .

You should cover it most of the time until its about done and then uncover it so it can get brown. Cooking time is usually about 15 minutes per pound. Hope this helps and have a Nice Thanksgiving!!!

Depends on the temperature you cook at.
If cooked slowly, 300 F you won't have to cover it.
If cooked hot, 400 F you will have to cover it.
