Yes, you really have to beat the **** out of the turkey to tenderize it. Be sure it is already dead before you do this, though. We wouldn't want Tom Turkey to suffer.

I personally don't do it. But I do wrap in plastic wrap,put it in Three Giant ZIP LOCK bags. Give it to my 4yr old Nephew and tell him to have fun. A COOKS TRICK! Killing Two Birds with one Stone. BABYSITTING & COOKING 101.
