Whuffing noises as they quickly withdraw their heads when you pass are normal. Squeaks are more worrisome. Check the eyes, nose, and mouth for any signs of discharge.

Sliders do not normally make noises for mating, etc., so most noises are concerns.

One big possibility is Respiratory Infection (RI)- the turtle version of a bad cold or flu. RI is best treated aggressively rather than waiting for it to develop further.

Treat by boosting tank temps about 5 degrees, to about 80-85F, make sure the filters are set well to keep the water clean, etc. Consider adding UVB lighting, etc.

Looked at the pics. Very colorful and very nice shell pattern. Definitley not a red eared slider. Probably a chicken turtle. Either way, care for it as if it was a slider. Make sure to give it a basking lamp (heat lamp) and a UVB fluorescent bulb. Also a heater for the water too...

It's possible that your turtles are merely breathing hard, because when they see you, they probably think you are bringing food. And when turtles sense food around, they like to breathe in the surrounding air to get a whiff of it. Have you seen their throats bulge in and out like a toad? They're sniffing the air.

But I would be concerned if it's more of a wheezing sound. This could indicate a respiratory infection, and most likely if one turtle is sick, so is the other. In order to cure RI, you need to see a vet.
