Take a warm shower or bath, then snuggle up with a good book. More often than not it works for me.

The restless mind may be persistently in a state as to
make one feel like they are in a prison,
no escape from lingering
thoughts,
so a map or tool is needed for release of flowing
thoughts,
sometimes having the radio on invades the mind's
conscious identification so repose may enter,
whether music or psycho babel this sometimes helps,
then again there have been many times i just stay up
and eventually the mind & body will let one know
when it needs to close down ~
Sometimes 48 hours later!!
I never use sleeping pills ~
Meditaion does help to clear ones mind,
yet,
we are all different, aren't we?

Option 1 - sometimes I go work on my computer. It makes me sleepy,
Option 2 - go to another room and read until I feel I am shutting off, and then I return to my bed, and fall asleep,
Option 3 - if nothing mentioned above works I take an herb Valerian root. Works great.

I have to take sleeping medication. I have very unfortunately stayed awake for days on end until my psyche breaks down. I would say there is nothing to worry about until you get past four or five days if you are still connected to reality and not having waking dreams, but after that, it's time to get tranked. I have met people claiming to have stayed awake for longer than two weeks, but personally my own record is a mere five days. I was not coherent during that time. It was very unpleasant.
