I was never read to as a child.

I was told to read things on my own and yelled at because I had to read out loud to process things.

I was not even taught all the letters, let alone their sounds. Because I had a Teacher that tried to bring attention to me and as it turned out my Principle had tried to Sue my Grandfather for Medical Malpractice. I was not informed this until I was an adult,.. I have been told she was literally laughed at in court. She had tried to put me in a place for Juvenial Delinquints when I was in the first grade, I was placed in a far off school instead where there was a class for the "Behaviorally Handicap" where I was abused all day by boys in the 1st and 2nd grade that were 11-12 years old. Noone read to me in school there. The next school I went to I had to work to be rewarded letters of the Alphabet to learn to create in Caps, Lower case, & cursive. I never got all the letters in the years I was there, they would give me random letters and not even tell me what they were. Only one in one style and size at a time.

I thought I would never learn to read. I had learning disablities so when I tried to read books I would shake,.. I still have that problem with books and magazines after a while.

So I have learned to read and write very well from the computer. The Internet and Video Games are very beneficial. I didn't have to worry about shakeing and I could highlight text so I would visually skip every where from my LD.

Now I read all the time, but only on the computer. Usually text another human being has recently typed about themselves. I have read some books and comics on my computer. The fastest I have been able to read a comic was half an hour and it had emotes and one cut up sentence. Combined they wouldn't even be enough paragraphs to fit half an hour.

So as a Child, I was rarely read to ( basically the only time someone else would be involved was if I was reading to them).

Now I read constantly, but not books, comics, or magazines. Just things like forums, chats, and games where the chat is dominated by other users. Reading is required in my social life since health and neighborhood mean I can't go anywhere or talk to anyone offline where I live.

I don't think I was ever read to as a child. I don't remember it anyway. We still have all the books from my childhood so it looks like we might have read a lot... but I would think I would remember some of it anyway.
As an adult I read occasionally. When I am on summer break from college I read the whole time. I don't have time to read while in school.

I was almost never read to. It happened once a week (for a couple years) when my class went to the library and the librarian read to us. We were encouraged to check out books to read at home. However, the library was rather comprehensive and had a good number of comics.

I am 22 years old and have only read one novel excluding any required reading for my education. And when I could, I would read the Cliff Notes. I am currently trying to read a second book. I had promised myself a chapter a night but that plan fell apart after chapter 4. I find it very hard to remain focused and I tend to read much slower than my peers. It is very frustrating when you are at university and there are no more Cliff Notes.

I do read the news, magazines, and wikis on a daily basis.

Occassionally. I remember my mom would take me to check out or buy a book and before bed I'd have her read a page or two and then she'd let me read some too and help me prounounce the words I struggled with. I liked her to read to me sometimes but I also remember I wanted to learn how to read so I'd read aloud most of the time.
I read occassionally now. It's not that I dislike reading and I don't nesscarily love love it-although I'm working on my own novel 'n' I kinda have to be a reader in order to be a writer...but I am very particular about what I read. I have to be able to relate to it and the characters have to be around my age or a little bit older. It's probably a lot to be asking for, but I find that I enjoy a book better when I can relate to the characters and their problems that they face.

All the best!!!

My dad loved to read to me and my younger siblings every night before bed. I clearly remember getting the chronicles of narnia read aloud a chapter at a time before bed, before I could even read them. He only stopped this when I got my own room at 14.

I would die if not for books. Seriously. If I haven't read anything in a while, I get REALLY cranky. Not so much fun, as I am normally easygoing. On average, I read a novel every three days. In the summer, I read at least a book a day. If not more. I am a voracious reader.

Is someone doing homework on the correlation between being read to as a child and reading now? =)

No. I was given books, though. A thick Mother Goose and Grimm book, and a picture book: Children's Bible. I started reading some of my parent's books when I finished them, and my neighbor's fairy tale books and horror stories.

I don't know if that helped, but I my grammar was above-average when I was a toddler. I am consistently considered the best in Creative Writing and English: I am sort of an anti-stereotype kind of girl. I still enjoy reading.

With my other siblings, though, my Mom reads them books before going to bed. My siblings don't like reading as much as I do.

I was never pressured to read, but I was encouraged to. I was a curious kid, and still am, so I think that helped foster my reading habits.

In short: No, I've never been read to--at least, I don't remember--but I was given books and encouraged to. I'm a wide reader.

Yes, I was read to as a child. My mother read to me every night, till I started to read independently.

I still read, but not all the time, as I used to. Now I have two kids, and don't seem to have as much time for reading anymore. But I still always have a novel by my bed, and read it as often as I can. (I'm just finishing up The Virgin Earth, by Philippa Gregory. I'm almost done, so I just ordered another book by her, The Other Boleyn Girl.)

Now that I'm a parent, mostly I read to my own children. I read to them every night, without fail. My oldest is now 11 years old and I STILL read to her. She had some trouble learning how to read when she was little, but now she is doing really well in reading, and I know that my reading to her helped her a lot! She has wonderful comprehension when she reads, and I know that being read to helps so much with comprehension. (Besides, we love the time we spend together when I'm reading to her!)

My youngest is 6, and reads really well for a 6 year old. She's reading Junie B. Jones books out loud to me, now. And I'm reading her the All of a Kind Family books.

So I hope I'm passing on the love of reading to my kids.

I know that's sort of a long winded answer. I wonder, why are you asking?

Yes; Occasionally, but i hated it and didn't want my parents to read to me, and still hate reading today. Mostly read because i have for school and stuff, but i would love not have to read ever. Unless it is a very cool book then i can get into it.

I was read to a lot as a child; I had a collection of Berenstein Bears books, Little Golden Books and my mother also told me stories that she remembered from her childhood, my favourite was "The Boy That Cried Wolf."

I love to read even now, however, I don't read as much as I'd like to, I simply don't have the time.

I was read to often as a child. I am an avid reader and have been since I was 5. My parent's house was always filled with books and my father is a teacher. We were taught to like and respect the written word as children.
