Yes he is lying to you. Do you not see people everyday on TV bashing America and President Bush? Including Democratic Presidential candidates. No one gets arrested for this, we have freedom of speech here no matter what that jerk is telling you.

Because he has no idea as to the reality of living here.
Not nearly as bad as 1984. For that matter, not even as bad as living in N Ireland during the 70's/80's
Your mentor is only lying if he knows what he is saying is wrong. It sounds more like ignorace that lying though.
I don't know why he was arrested. When was he here & where was he arrested? Nearly anyone can access public records of arrests.
Cuba & the torture of suspects is a stain on America's honor, and is only advocated by the cruel or the ignorant. In our defense, which grants us no absolution whatsoever, a majority is disgusted by these acts & make their viewpoints heard. If it was as bad as your mentor says, do you think there would be such a vigorous disagreement with gov't policy?

If he knows the truth and tells you the opposite, then that would be a lie.
If he believes what he is saying, then it wouldn't be a lie, just bad information.
Ask your mentor the meaning of the word privilege.
Then read the Constitution Article 1 Section 9, second paragraph.
"The privilege of the writ of habeas corpus shall not be suspended, unless when in cases of rebellion or invasion the public safety may require it.
Ask him if a privilege is the same thing as an inalienable right.
If he says they are the same, that would be a lie or he's an idiot.
Ask him if foreign terrorists residing in the USA intent on destroying the economy or government constitutes an invasion or is a threat to public safety.
If he says no, he may believe it and he's an idiot.
Next, read Amendment IV to the mentor.
"The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized."
Then ask him if the words "unreasonable" means "all".
If he says yes, that would be a lie.
Ask him if a law enforcement officer needs a warrant to search if he has probable cause.
The decision in Terry v. Ohio (1968) established seizures may be made in reasonable cause if the officer believes a crime has been committed or soon will be committed.
Next, read Amendment V to the mentor.
No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a grand jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the militia, when in actual service in time of war or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offense to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.
Ask him if he heard any exceptions noted in the amendment.
If he says no, ask him to pay attention and read it to him again. If he says no the second time, it's either a lie or he's an idiot.
Next, read Amendment I and Amendment II to the mentor.
Amendment I
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
Amendment II
A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.
Then ask him if "the people" mentioned in both are the same people.
If he says no, he may believe it but he's an idiot.
As mentioned before, demand a refund if he's charging money for the mentoring.

Yes he is. America is not a bad country at all. Sure, we have undesirables like Michael Jackson, George W. Bush, The Clintons, Barack Obama and Rosie O'Donnell, but which country doesn't have it's bad people? Germany had Hitler, Britain had Jack the Ripper, Russia had Joseph Stalin.
I don't know why in hell you're English teacher is badmouthing America, but he hasn't been here to expeience it. We badmouth our country all the time. That's what editorial cartoons in the newspaper are all about. See, unlike in most communist countries or countries with monarchs we get to badmouth our leaders, because they are basically just representatives that make laws and handle national problems. And if we don't like somebody, like say, the President, we can boot him out and get another one elected who'll do the job right. And that, my foreign friend, is how America rolls.
As for your friend, we do have laws, like, No drunks in public,no fighting, things like that. Resisting arrest can get you in trouble. Being arrested isn't a big deal, if you're innocent. You pay bail (money to get you out of jail until the trial), go to a trial, have your case heard by a jury, and if they have no evidence, then they cannot arrest you or even convict you for that matter. He probably broke a law and got arrested for it. We're free to do what we want, but you have to follow the rules.

If the government was arresting people who said bad things about the country, YA politics might be a little more enjoyable but, as you can see, they are all alive, well, free and still full of crap.
BTW: I hope you're not paying this mentor. If you are, ask for your money back.

English mentor? What are you like Little Lord Fauntleroy or something?
It's not quite so bad as 1984. The American spy agencies are more incompetent for one thing.

Have you spent time on YA reading the junk people are saying about their own country? If not, read a few. Then ask yourself if it is true. Even the worse comment or accusation is legal and protected by law.
