Wow, andy is full of misinformation up there. Here's some 'real' facts...
The Holden Monaro was slated to be discontinued in either 2007 or 2008. It's termination was moved up to 2006 with GMs turn around plan.
They did much more than move the steering wheel to make is a product for the US. Probably the biggest change was to put the gas tank in the space at the front of the trunk, making it too small for more than a set of golf clubs. I also read somewhere that the details in bring this car to the US market included something like 200 weatehrstrip and insulation changes.
The Monaro was indeed slower than the GTO. It did have a small block Chevy engine, but the GTO got the Corvette LSX version with more power.
By the way, Pontiac has another Holden coming to the Americas - the all new G8, which is based on the Commodore. It hits showrooms in early 2008.

well the guy from australia is right but seeing i own an actual GTO ill fill in some blanks here. the GTO is an import from australia which is the holden manaro, their oldest muscle car they had for a while. The platform they used was the GM V platform, which all they did for the GTO was move the steering wheel over to the other side and took majority of the sportier exterior/interior features off. also just so you know the car was discontinued for these reasons: holden was tired of making the manaro and decided to finally retire it, they were starting up a new platform called the zeta platform which the chevy camaro is based on and the ponatic G8 which is coming soon (also a holden commodore rebadge). also the car did have any design modifications, it was an exact rebadge of the manaro which is a 2 door variant of the commodore. so whatever they did to theirs, we got the same. except of course the front and rear facias, standard sportier options, fenders, rims, etc

The GTO is based around our Monaro coupe, which is based upon the Holden Commodore base. I believe them to be slower and uglier than our one. After it was taken up by america they started a limited run of the GTO's in australia as well. holden is also owned by GM, along with Pontiac, Buick, Vauxhall, Hummer, Cadillac, Opel, Saab and many others. We have stopped producing the Monaro which the GTO is based upon, even tho I am pretty sure it was simply made by increasing the leangth of the drivers door and rear-quarter panels of the usual 4-door Commodore.
