A handful of people who played in the NFL have had a crack at top class or international rugby.
Richard Tardits was a marginal player in the NFL for 3 seasons. In the off-season, he played a bit of rugby, and when his NFL career was over, he played a few games for the United States.
A better example of someone playing both sports professionally is Dan Lyle. He had a few tryouts with NFL teams, but wasn't quite good enough. He turned to rugby, did well, and soon found himself playing for the USA. He won a contract with Bath, where he played for 7 years. During that span, they won the Heineken Cup. In the 2001-2002 season, he captained the team.
I suspect that there are quite a few more people like him who are just a shade below the standard to get an NFL contract who could do quite well at rugby.

Good Call AJ, athletes can generally play any sport but not always as good as those born into that countries main sports. I mainly always played Rugby league but played a bit of union too, however I could play defence in soccer too (sorry ref), reasonably good at tennis, squash, cricket too. The physicality isnt an issue is it because most of the NFL hits are fairly unadulterated hence the requirement for pads & helmets. Rugby is similar but different and a lot of the top back field defensive players would do well as would full backs, RB's and some wide receivers probably more so in Leugue than Union. It is natural for RB's WR's etc to pass the ball backwards just not in the traditional sense, you forget that the ball can only be passed forward once in NFL any other passes must be laterals (sideways or backwards)

Football and Rugby are two totally different games. It would be like having tennis and badminton play a game.
It just wouldn't work.
