vertical, I was on the way to agreeing with you a little until you mentioned home runs, and it WASN'T in reference to Ruth. Probably not the best point to bring up. BTW, Ruth hit more HR's before he turned 26 than Cobb hit in his 24 year career.

Cobb couldn't pitch either.

Ruth is the best all-around player ever, so I'll pick him in any vs. you could come up with.

Cobb emerged and excelled during the pitcher-friendly dead-ball era while Ruth did his work during the beginning of the live ball era, which gave the hitter an advantage. Ruth had an easier time seeing the ball than Cobb did, but he also was an outstanding pitcher. Excelling at both hitting and pitching at the Major League level is something no other player has been able to duplicate since. I would have to go with The Babe.

First of all you're not even comparing apples to apples on this one. Cobb was no doubt the best hitter there was, even over Charlie Hustle. Ruth on the other hand was a power hitter.

I could really get into this a lot deeper, but there's no point trying to defend what I'm talking about when you're not making an equal comparison.

Oh and Vertical --- your comment about Ruth being a fat cigar smoking fool only proves what an ignorant Yankee hater you are. I'm sure that both $C-Note$ and I could give you some insight into what a maladjusted person Ty Cobb was considering that a lot of fans that loved the guy would admit that he wasn't always on the up and up where his behavior was concerned --- on and off the field.

Babe Ruth. He is a better all around hitter than Cobb.

Unless Ty Cobb could pitch like the Babe it's pretty much a landslide in favor of Ruth, and we know Cobb couldn't pitch. Ruth is twice as good as the next best player (no matter who you think it is). No one even come CLOSE.

Cobb Lifetime Batting Average ---> .366
Ruth Lifetime Batting Average ---> .342

White it is true Cobb has a higher batting average, Cobb was hitting base hits, while Ruth was hitting Home Runs.

Cobb accounted for 2,246 runs for his 11,434 at bats or 19.6% of his at bats helped score a run, either through an RBI or someone batting him in for the run.

Ruth accounted for 2,174 runs for his 8,398 at bats or 25.9% of his at bats helped score a run, either through an RBI or someone batting him in for the run.

Both were great players, but Ruth was better.

And Babe Ruth was not fat, he was 6'2" and weighed 215lbs, he just looked fat because of the baggy uniforms and he had a fat face.

the Babe was the greatest of all time, no matter how you look at it- he wasn't just an empty power hitter; he had several seasons hitting over .340 and he regularly had OBP of .450 and more (he knew how to take a walk) - he could even run a little and was a pretty damn good pitcher as well.

Cobb was a great pure hitter and base runner. He played primarily before the baseball was changed (1919), and was publicly not fond of the home run. He was much better than Pete Rose who got the all time hit record in about 3,000 more AB's.

If there were clips I think a talented scout could say who was the better ballplayer i would say Cobb because of his all around talent speed average defense but Babe was more instrumental so if you want who is more valuable to one team I would say Babe but if you want who is the better player all around it would be Cobb

Ty Cobb was definitely the worse human being. Racist and mean. However, he was a better hitter and base stealer. He also proved that he could hit home runs when he wanted.
