like the satellite companies have upped them one in bidding in a completive market. Is this a sign that cable can’t compete with the other providers in getting premium events on T.V. ?

Sports, football, cable. satellite whatever. It all comes down to money. The major networks must compete heavily in the field because the stations in the network need air time to sell advertising. Most cable networks are limited in scope and don't have the bucks to compete. ESPN does to a degree because they are ABC who is GE. Network revenue needs the drawing card and the drawing card is paid handsomely for its participation.
