I have been at my job for 3 years and two reasons why I have stayed is because 1) I needed a low stress job to pay bills while I found something I like to do (which I have found, but just not successful at it yet) 2) my boss is great (until today). I mean he's still a good person, but I was hurt when we had a meeting with him and I felt somewhat betrayed because he basically told me and another coworker our jobs will be eliminated in Feb 08 after the companies merges and after they use our expertise and he knew about this for a while now & just told us today.

I was planning to go through IVF treatments with this employer and planned on getting pregnant, have baby, then quit within a year. The company covers 60% of IVF treatment up to $10,000 lifetime.

But I feel like if I stay, then any day now my employer will give me the axe because that's how these employers are. They just let you go whenever and I don't want to stick around until they do that, but I would like the healthcare.

My husband has health ins, but it does not cover IVF.

I just don't want my self esteem to go down when employers do that to me. it makes me feel like shiet. Since I've been wanting to quit for a long time now, I thought this could be a sign to do it now. What do you think?

How long do the IVF treatments take before being effective? You still have 4 months to do them if you really want them. When they lay you off, they have to pay for Unemployment Benefits... so you will still have some money coming in for the next 6 months. You can ride this all the way down if you want to.

If the new thing you want to do is a home-based business, it might be the perfect time to really work this.

who is using who?
you are using them for IVF treatments, hopefully get pregnant and then quit?
sounds like you have it all calculated out
i hope you get the axe sooner'
it's no wonder companies get reluctant to hire women
a company deserve some sort of employee loyalty
but you make the argument for at will very well,
why even off health insurance for someone who doe not plan to stay long
in my opinion IVF should not be covered
at all
you want kids
adopt
or pay cash for the IVF which have a low success rate
why should the health care system pay for that?

Your employer wasn't using you anymore than you were using him. I mean really, did you tell him you were just working there for the next year to use their insurance to get pregnant and then you were leaving? I think it was really a nice thing of him to let you know this far in advance so that you will have time to find a job. He could've waited and told you the day it happened while having security escort you out.

As for whether you stay there until then, use the time to find something else you like equally. It's easier to find a job when you have one than when you don't.

Absolutely. You've been loyal enough and you know they're cutting you soon so why stick around and wait for it? Start looking 4 a new job and when you find it call it quits. Good Luck!
