Depends on where you live, how may prior offenses, what you stole, etc.'
However, if you're my kid, be ready for some SERIOUS face time with mamma and a very familiar acquaintance with the interior of your room for a very long time.

You will probably get either probation or a suspended sentence. Either of these means you don't go to jail, but it remains on your record so if you get caught again you get a lot worse. You might get community service, but since you already -do- community service, my guess is the judge will not impose it as a requirement. Also, being tried as a juvenile means that you can have it expunged (removed) from your record when you turn 18. So you can go into the military, get a job working with children, get a security clearance, etc. etc. In other words, if you never get into any more trouble, this one time won't hurt your chances of having a normal life. The punishment for the second offense is usually much more harsh. The most important thing is that you learn from the experience, and it sounds like you have.

A minor will only be subject to rehabilitation if caught for shoplifting because minority is an exempting circumstance under the Penal Law.

Probably not even a "slap on the hand".

While substituting at a local middle school, I had a checkbook and wallet stolen from my purse. When I discovered the theft, I reported the theft to the school and filed a police report. My checkbook was found, discarded, in someone's yard (within block of the school). One check had even been written to the order of the mother of a student at this school. The student in question has four outstanding warrants against him, and he is only 14! Within five days of the theft of my checkbook and wallet, the student was identified, by camera surveillance, exiting another teacher's classroom with her PDA!. To this date, no action as been taken. Apparently, no one is willing to "take on" a minor!

Sometimes it depends on how many offenses you have. They will probably take you down to the station and call your parents. Most likely your parents will have to pay a fine. If it was a first time thing you will be let off with a warning, and it will be wiped off your permanent record...

haha, were you planning on shoplifting? it depends if its your first offense, what you steal, what circumstances. It could be anywhere from a warning to juvenile detention. Your obviously not going to jail for stealing a candy bar for example, so it all depends on the situation

i'm not sure but i think the first time you do it, it's just a warning. then i dont know what happens the other times. one of my friends shoplifted a whole bunch of stuff and they gave her a warning and her parents had to pay for everything she stole.

Juvenile detention and you should pray that you get caught while a juvenile. If not, you'll just move on to bigger things with bigger penalties. Start with gum, go to CDs, then clothing and then to cars. If you're lucky you'll get caught with the gum and someone scares the bejesses out of you.

It should be everyone in the store you shoplifted gets to beat yo bad azz. Just not kill you. If that doesn't stop juvenile crime, nothing will.

If it's petty theft, like anything less than a grand, then security will hold you and tell you to call your parents and tell them to pick you up. Then the security will warn you not to step in this store until you're over 18.

lol, How do I know this?
