3x is a number when added to 9 gives 63
The number must then be 54
3x = 54
x = 18
Working would be set out as follows:-
3x + 9 = 63
3x = 54
x = 18

You are trying to solve for 'x'.
Begin with neutralizing the plus or minus parts of the equation first, then work on the multiplication / division parts.
So, to keep things equal, just do the SAME thing to BOTH sides of the equation at every step.
First, by subtracting 9 from BOTH sides
63 -9 = 3x +9 -9 = 54 = 3x
The if you divide BOTH sides by 3
54 / 3 = 3x / 3, then you get 18 = 3/3 x = 1x or x
Every algebra problem can be solved this way, if you know the few rules to follow.
And ALWAYS write out EVERY step, even if you don't need to, because sometimes you will need to and the teacher can see that you know what you are doing. Plus if you do make a mistake, you will understand where it occurred and you could get partial credit.

Okay, first you re-write the problem like this:
63=3x+9 and write 3x under 3x. You get cross out the 3s and now your left with: 63=x+9.
Now, you do the opposite and subtract 9 and your left with:63=x.
Theres your answer, or at least how I was taught this year in 7th grade. The trick is to always get the variable by itself.

add negative 9 to 9 and to 63, the 9 will then equal 0 and the 63 will be 54. then devide the three and the 63 both by 3. the three will now equal zero and leave the X by itself on the right side. the 54 will now be 18, wich means that X=18 you can check this by plugging 18 in where the X was so it would be like this 63 = 3 x 18 + 9, wich is true. this is basic algebra/pre- algebra, hope this helps

First, subtract 9 from both sides. You want to get the X alone, so isolate it.
63=3x+9
-9 -9
54=3x
You are left with 54=3x. Because x is multiplied 3 times, we want to divide both sides by 3, the "undo" of multiplication
18=x
We then get x=18
Hope this helps

Solve for the x-variable...
First: combine "like" terms - subtract 9 from both sides (when you move a term to the opposite side, always use the opposite sign).
63 - 9 = 3x+9 - 9
63 - 9 = 3x
54 = 3x
Sec: solve for "x" by isolating it on one side by itself - divide both sides by 3.
54/3 = 3x/3
54/3 = x
18 = x
x = 18

Hi,
For this question, we first need to know that in the end of the problem, we need x alone. Therefore, we need to subtract 9 from both sides of the equation like shown below:
63 - 9 = 3x + 9 - 9
54 = 3x
At this point, we need to notice that we need to undo the operation being done onto x by dividing both sides by 3 to get:
x = 18 <==== FINAL ANSWER
I hope that helps you out! Please let me know if you have any other questions!
Sincerely,
Andrew
