Really as bad as I assumed once I realized what had been done to my car? Because it is currently in the shop and I have been driving a rental provided by my full coverage insurance for the past 3 - 4wks.

The engine can not be ruined by suger, if that is your question. Sugar can't carmelize in the engine, like the myths say. It can clog fuel lines and filters.

Insurance wouldn't cover a rental for 3 weeks since replacing the filter and cleaning the fuel lines can be done while you wait at any competent service garage.
In 3 to 4 weeks, they can rebuild an engine, transmission, remove the body for complete stripping and painting, rebuild the interior from seats to door panels, to header, put in a new dash and instrumentation, custom make wheels and exhaust system, and re-wire the complete vehicle. Heck, in "OverHaulin" they can do a lot more!

The worst that can happen, is the screen on the pump or the filter will clog. The fuel rail maintains about 40 psi, and the rest keeps recirculating
