Yes, we were there this summer. We cut through it on our way from Yosemite to the Monterey Bay area. It was nothing more than a small agricultural based town (by appearances). My daughter was terribly disappointed expecting a So Cal beach front place.

My wife and I are retired full-time RVers.
We spent most of the summer at the Thousand Trails Campground just 16 miles south of Hollister, CA. We found the town to be pleasant and somewhat of a sleepy agriculturally oriented town. The area is prone to frequent earthquakes and that keeps things "shaking". [Pun intended!]
South of town on Hwy 25 is the Pinnacles National Park and is well worth a visit and a beautiful hike! There are lots of vineyards in the local area.
The weather is mild year round and the scenery is pleasant as are the locals.
We found the area to be a nice place to hang out away from the crowds!
We found the wildlife at the campground to be continually entertaining with bobcats, squirrels, rabbits and of course birds.
We enjoy this area of California!
