Why a lot of business owners, managers, executives and rich people were once or are sales people?

I think the premise behind why sales people tend to be higher paid for selling a product rather than say the engineer that develops the product is because even if the product is the best on the market it may be sold less than inferior products of the same price if the product's qualities and the qualities of the company that makes it are not effective sold to the customer as well. This is the job of sales.

However, I do think that often times sales people get an unfair amount of the benefit of a sale when customer service or the product design is the real cause for the sale rather than the salesman's pitch.

Sales and Marketing experience usually includes a good amount of time learning about the product to be sold, how it is made, how it is used, where it is used and who uses it. They have a good knowledge of how businesses operate what items are profitable( make money). They understand the reasons for business. So when it is time to execute, own ,manage or develop, the sales person often is the one who qualifies to lead. So he is entitled to the "big Bucks".

If you think about it, most sales people work on commission so it's do or die. Once you live that way you learn how to be smart about a lot of things especailly money!
