If you've ever seen real nature, you'll know that being "eliminated" is a very unpleasant experience, even aside from the whole dying part. When a predator brings down its prey, it doesn't wait until they prey is dead. The prey gets to experience a very violent, painful death.
Furthermore, animals have nothing but their fur to protect them from the elements, and this isn't always enough. If an animal gets too cold, it can't build a fire to warm itself. Also, when an animal gets a disease, it has no medicine and must either suffer through it, or succumb and die. And because only humans have agriculture, starvation is a constant threat to every animal in the wild.
We humans, being clever little apes, have found ways at beating all these limitations, and have more than tripled our lifespans as a result. Most humans, especially in the more developed countries, don't have to worry about the elements, or starvation, or being torn to shreds and eaten alive by another animal, or dying as the result of a broken leg or minor infection. Humans also have many forms of entertainment, from TV to books to sports to the Internet, and that has really done much to make our lives more pleasant.
The lives of many animals in the wild is short and brutal. Sorry, but my vote is squarely in the human camp. :-)

Although I agree with your theory, it may not lead to the conclusion that animals have a more pleasent existence than humans.
Animals, like humans, have to fight for their existence. However animals, unlike humans, usually travel in groups. In being less intelligent than humans, they compensate for a flaw by eating said animal discouraging the group from moving forward.
Humans, being more self-sufficient than animals, can deal with flaws without having to eliminate the person completely. However, humans know that other humans react when made fun of for flaws and that is what humans do to compensate for other's flaws and their own insecurities.
Hope that made any sense whatsoever ;)

Easier, simpler, but not more pleasant.
Animals barely know what causes them pleasure; humans, unless they have a brain disorder, understand this very well, and can easily reproduce what causes them pleasure. Even with a brain disorder, humans can sometimes give themselves pills or heal themselves in another fashion to regain pleasure (Prozac, anyone?). But animals seek only survival; they know that some things set off "pleasure centers" in their brains but they barely comprehend this and only seek food and sex as means of survival of species. Humans, on the other hand, can seek food or sex that makes life more pleasant, not just that sustains their life.
Life is only pleasant if you find pleasure, so humans, being better equipped to find pleasure, get the win so to speak over animals in this category.

Certainly not the ones being tortured in research labs, or the ones being individually tortured everyday by any sadistic human who get physical control over them.
Certainly not any who have to exist in a world with other creatures who use and abuse them because of their smug and false superiority and the erroneous belief that they are better than the animals.

animals live more pleasant existences than humans because animals are unaware of their own existence...they are, they do, they don't think, reason, infer, deduce...they accept what they are and what they have and they don't waste their lives wishing to be something they are not...if i finish this life out well enough perhaps i will be promoted next time to an animal of some sort

Some of them do. Many of them are so badly abused by humans that there is no way it is a good life. God never meant for man to be cruel like this but we choose what we want to do.

One thing for sure, animals do not suffer from things like insecurity, low self-esteem, murderous rages, angst, emotional torture, rejection from society (ok this one is arguable), and political suckiness.
