Referring to the construction of the pyramids themselves, they have no mortar or other means of joining the blocks of limestone, which fit together so well that it is actually difficult to put a card (such as an ATM card) between the blocks.
In reference to the Giza Plateau each of the pyramids has its own adjoining funerary temple and auxiliary buildings. Each was also originally surrounded by a low retaining wall and functioned as an individual complex of the necropolis.
Dr Zawi Hawass and Mark Lehner have been researching and restoring the Giza Plateau complex, including the workers village and cemeteries for the past 20 years.
It is interesting that Mark Lehner originally came to Egypt to prove the prophesy of Edgar Cayce that in 1999 the secrets of the Pharaohs would be located and revealed to the world.
Dr Hawass has an excellent website full of information on his work and findings

There are no underground basis. The ground was made absolutely flat then the carefully cut stones with right angles were put tightly next to each other. There is no cement nor any other joining material. After putting all the stones of the first raw, they started to put the stones of the second raw. By weight the upper stones are perfectly fitted in place. If you look at the stones of the pyramid of Cheops especially, you will notice horizontal lines. The reason for that is that the stones of each raw have exactly the same height thus the horizontal lines.
