Well, if it's just for a little while (few minutes to few hours), then just light up the candles in a safe place, never leave them unattended, get some flashlights out. Try not to flush toilets anymore than a couple times at most, because they won't have enough pressure built up to shoot the water and waste down after that. Try not to open the fridge or freezer, because you don't want to lose all the cold air.
If it's out for much longer than a few hours (ie. a few days like what happened back in august of.... wow when was that? 2003? when all the power went out in most of southern ontario and northern new york), then you'd better have lots of spare blankets, food rations that don't require refridgeration, make sure you can eat what you do have in the fridge and freezer, cuz otherwise it'll get spoiled. Try to have a portable grill that doesn't require electricity (propane or charcoal), this is a great time to have a lot of barbeque! Bottled water... Ya know, you can probably just google "Emergency power outage supplies" and get a lot of great ideas for what to keep on hand for these kinds of times.
Otherwise, for me, the power goes out I just light a bunch of candles, and sit and chat with my family, or try to read a book by the candle light, or listen to a battery-operated radio, or whatever. It's a nice change once in a while, but not too often ;)

Buy some candles and a flashlight with fresh batteries. If the power goes out stand a candle in a large glass and light it in there (to keep it from setting the table or dresser on fire). Put one in each room you are planning to be in. Keep the fridge closed to conserve its cold.
Most power outages are brief or a few hours at most so just keep hoping to wake up to the sound of the fridge motor running.

Since it is cold out I would throw another log on the fire and sit back in the dark. If I need I will get out an oil lamp or candle.
If it is going to be out for a long time I will take food from the fridge and freezer and put it outside.
When I need water I will fire up the generator and I can get water from the well again.

Having flashlights on hand is a good idea... just make sure you don't store them somewhere where you'd need a flashlight to find them if the power was off (discovered that one the hard way the other week).

if the power only goes out in your house then you may need to go to the fuse box/curcuit breaker and reset things
