The measure of an angle is 3 times the measure of its supplement.

Can anyone explain to me how to solve this and what the answer is? Thank you!

I forgot to mention that you're solving for x. So is the answer 135 or 45?
To me, it seems like it is 135.

In solving this kind of problem, you have to translate statements into representations and equations.

Let x be the angle
and y it's supplement.

Translate the sentence into equation word for word:

The angle is 3 times its supplement
x = 3 * y
then you can say:
x = 3y
We know that two angles are supplementary if and only if their sum is 180 degrees. So, we add the two angles and equate it to 180, that is:

3y + y = 180
4y =180
y = 45, this is the supplement.
Remember that the angle is 3 times its supplement:
x =3y
therefore: x = 3(45)
x = 135
or you can subtract 45 from 180 and get the same answer.

Take a variable: lets use n
n = the measure of an angle
(180 - n) = it's supplement

So you translate the English to math:
[The measure of an angle] is 3 TIMES the [measure of its supplement].

n = 3(180 - n)
n = 3*180 - 3*n
n = 540 - 3n
n + 3n = 540 - 3n + 3n
4n = 540
4n/4 = 540/4
n = 135

Check:
135 =? 3(180 - 135)
135 =? 3(45)
135 = 135

an angle b and its supplement add up to 180 degrees.

let's call the angle b and it's supplement a

a +b =180
and
3a =b
substituting b =3a into the equation
a + b =180 , we get
a +3a = 180
4a =180
a =180/4 =45

3a = 135
b =135

the 2 angles are 135 and 45

The answer is
angle = 135 degrees.

Supplement means 2 angles add up to 180 degrees..
So..
3x + x = 180 or.. 4x = 180
x = 45..
so the first angle is 135, the 2nd is 45

Let the angle be x degrees
Therefore its supplement is 180-x degrees
By the problem
x=3(180-x)
x=540-3x
x+3x=540
4x=540
x=135 degrees
The measure of the angle is 135 degrees

we know that supplementary angleas are equal to 180.

lets call the angle 180-x and the other supplement x.

180-x = 3x

180 = 4x
45 = x

the 2 angles are 45 and 135.
