No and yes. I made fun of Heather from America's Next Top Model (my guilty pleasure). Then I saw on earlier episode that she had Asberger's syndrome. It kind of put into perspective for me why she acted the way she did. However, I decided that she deserved equal treatment and continued to make fun of her, but with a greater appreciation.

Have I made fun of a mentally retarded person about being mentally reatrded? Absolutely not.

But have I made fun of a mentally retarded person for something that had nothing to do with a mental handicap? Hell yes. There was a retarded guy who worked at my old job and every day I made fun of him for being a Chicago Blackhawks fan. I'd do it to anyone else, just because he's a little different, it doesn't make him exempt from regular human interaction.

Actually I have not made fun of the mentally challenged. I am a mental health/mental retardation professional and I have worked with many persons with disabilities. I have found them to be the most charming and challenging people and I LOVED my job!!! My daughter grew up very comfortable around my clients and she then took work in a school and residential facility for MR/MI young people. Now she and her husband have six little ones of their own and they are foster parents. They also have custody of my son-in-law's adult special needs brother.
People often ridicule that which they do not understand. It is based on ignorance and fear. It's up to those of us who have first hand knowledge or experience with the mentally challenged to educate those in our communities to better understand these citizens so that the days of abuse, neglect, and ridicule can be put in the past!

properly, all I would desire to declare is that there is one chromosome distinction in the physique that makes one mentally challenged and not mentally challenged. those human beings as a replace of turning out to be exciting of those human beings would desire to deal with them like they might desire to each physique else with appreciate and dignity and be grateful and be of information for them in case they want it or ask for help. All ridicule does is teach how merciless and entirely out of touch those each physique is in the actual international and how specific those human beings rather are .

When I was a little kid and didn't really even know what retarded meant. Now, no. Unlike stupid people, they can't help it.

P.S. I love Heather! She reminds me of myself, lol.
