All depends what you like. I think Los Angeles puts the LA in LAME, but there's lots of people who absolutely love it.
My favorite big city is Chicago--lots of fun, cool architecture, great food and shopping, on the water, 4 seasons, interesting history. Philly, New York and Boston are great for similar reasons; Chicago is more laid back, and a little less expensive, though.
Most boring: hands down, Washington DC.
Dangerous: Detroit, Newark, parts of LA and DC
Safe: Boston, Chicago
As for pretty big cities...probably San Francisco or Miami.

San Francisco was pretty fun, especially if you like to watch weird people. New York City had all of that. Dangerous, ugly, pretty and fun. St. Louis is a fun place to go. Lots to do and easy access to most of it. The most ugly and dangerous would be Newark. I guess if I had to choose a best it would be either Boston or SanFran. Worst would be Newark or New York.

I hated traveling through Richmond....& I'm a native Virginian.
Charlotte is terribly confusing, though I think it will be a beautiful city if the construction ever stops.
Washington, DC. I was born & raised in this area & it was also one of the most dangerous places to be at night if you don't know your way around.
Pittsburgh. I don't even like the smell of this city.
Jacksonville & Orlando were both nice, but I haven't been to either place in nearly 40 years. Jacksonville was beautiful back then.....Orlando was congested even in the 60s.
Charleston, WV...rather dreary...but then again, it was raining when I visited.
