Typically, a PhD program involves two to three years of classwork, a written exam after the second year (mine was a two day exam), an oral exam after the third year, a dissertation following the coursework and a defense of the dissertation.
Typically, it takes four to eight years. Those in the sciences usually get through faster than those in the liberal arts.
I know a couple people who got a PhD in three years (including my advisor) -- but this is very rare.

If you can get all your class to get your bs in 4 years then about another two years for your masters and then it depends on how fast you do your thesis. Avg is about 6 to 7 years. it all depends on several factors but you have to work hard and not have much of a life to get it done in less time than that.
