Usual recommendation is 6 weeks, however some doctors say four weeks. Speak to your doctor he/she would advise you how long should you be off work as it can depend on what kind of work you do. I could see if you self-employed that you want to go to work asap, but you have to remember that you must not lift anything more heavier than full kettle.

You didn't say if it was a full or partial hysterectomy. Everybody is different and will heal in different ways. It is an individual thing really-if you can manage financially don't feel pressured in to going back too soon. Only you can be the real judge of when is right.
Your surgeon should be able to give you a rough guideline and I think it is about three months or 8-12 weeks.
However, straying from the subject a bit here do you need the hysterectomy? If the cause is something like cancer then don't delay! However, if it is not then I urge you to check out a book called "No more hysterectomies" by Dr Vicki Hufnagel.
I am neither pro nor anti hysterectomy if there is a need for it, however, the doctors don't always get it right. The medical profession is lead by men so they have a one eyed view of the medical world. There is reason to believe they are to keen to chop out a women's parts if she is older than child bearing age or has finished having her family. They regarded those bits as having served their purpose and no longer required. Though, they don't seem to apply the same philosophy to a male's bits and hack them off when things go wrong.
Always fully inform yourself, question the doctors decision if you don' agree-you have the right to an independent second opinion.
I probably don't need to tell you this is life altering surgery.

Just ask the doctor! My wife had a total (Through the stomach and had everything out) and was off work for 4 months. Key hole and just bits taken out then it is possible to be back after two weeks but just ask the surgeon, he knows better than all of us here and can tell you of your particular circumstances eg age, job, general health etc

Impurrfe is right however you may be able to return to work earlier depending on what line of work you're in. I returned 3 weeks after an abdominal hysterectomy with my GYN's blessing because I was doing well and have a desk job,

at least 6 weeks. it is a major op, cutting through a major muscle group. you will not even be able to lift a kettle for a few weeks. don't rush things, even if you feel you can. you can't see inside and if you rupture internal stitches it could lead to a lot of nasty problems.
