They are of great use in sports statistics. Any time there are out of the ordinary stats (such as brady anderson hitting 50 home runs one season) the box and whisker plot really demonstrates how out of place that one season was.

It is a way of representing the distribution of your data. Box plots show median, 1st and 3rd quartiles, minimum and maximum.
If you have several sets of data, drawing a box plots adjacent to each other will compare them graphically.
