Well, many of the "must do" things (to me) in Chicago are summer things.... Wrigley Field or Sox park, a concert or festival in Grant Park or a street fair anywhere, hanging out on the lakefront to bike ride or run. Most of the activities in December are indoor stuff, with the exception of a few things.

If it's not too cold you might want to check out Millenium Park and in particular the ice rink. Even if you're not skating, it's fun to watch other do it. Or maybe take one of those carriage rides down Michigan Ave.

Other things that might be considered "musts" are: drinks at the Signature Room in the John Hancock Building, a concert at the House of Blues, window shopping (or real shopping) on Michigan Ave. or State Street, club hopping in Wicker Park, Lincoln Park Zoo (again, if it's not too cold outside), Second City or Zanies comedy clubs, any of the local live theaters (Steppenwolf, Goodman, etc., as well as some of the smaller, cheaper theaters that nevertheless have great productions), the museums (Field, Science and Industry, Adler Planetarium, Shedd Aquarium), art museums (Art Institute or Museum of Contemporary Art or the National Museum of Mexican Art), a ride up to Evanston (a suburb just north of Chicago, accessible by public transportation and with a sort of small college-town feel - but not too small), Navy Pier (there's enough stuff to do inside so you don't have to worry too much about the weather), the Garfield Park or Lincoln Park Conservatories (a great place to be on a cold day - surrounded by huge tropical plants)...

there are probably a bunch more. Pick up a copy of Time Out Chicago magazine when you get here. They're are events that may only be occuring the week thatyou are here and they will be listed in there. Have fun.

Lakeshore Drive, and the Wrigley building, the Corn Cob (Parking House where if you have to drive to the last space it is one mile by car up to it) but from the outside it's fabulous!! A stay at O' hare airport after you arrive or before you leave is awesome. It is the busiest airport in the world. But it is like a city in itself. The "Weinkeller" is a famous bar which serves over 250 different "wait for it!" Beers, yes not wines. Go to a suburb called Cicero and do the Al Capone tour. Or go to a village (of sorts ) called Skokie. This is where the millionaires live and decorate their houses at Christmas!! Er no it's not like anything here I am talking real trains going around the estates as Santa etc. Very vulgar but worth seeing. Oxford St in London has nothing on Skokie.
A good tip though go onto Google Earth and have a look there! You can "fly" through it but also there are some sights to see there too. A famous thing about Chicago is the fast food chain called (I think) White Towers but are know in Chicago as "Whitey One Bites" very small hamburgers but delicious

If not too cold, take the Architectural Society's boat trip which leave from Michigan Ave bridge. It's absolutely fantastic!
Go up Sears Tower.
Go to Grant Park to see the wierd and wonderful public sculptures - espcially the 'bean' thing - you'll know it when you see it!
Have some Chicago pizza and a beer in Pizzeria Uno or Due(I liked Due better, nice late-night atmosphere!) Uno is on E Ohio, Due just round the corner from there.
I thought Navy Pier was really dull, but you have given no clue to your likes and dislikes, so maybe you will love it. Lots of people seem to!
