Hi, Could anyone tell me what sizes of crochet hook, knitting needle & yarn to buy to make a simple scarf. Skill level : Beginner with no experience. I have joined a class which will begin in the last week of November. The college catalog says " That students should bring their own crochet hook, knitting needle & yarn" for the first day of the class.Since i have no clue on this, i decided to post my question here. Thank you for your time & response. :)

Well why don't you phone the college and ask and if they can't tell you by a cheap set with F,G,H,I,J,K in them that will be plenty and buy yourself some plain worsted weight yarn in a couple of different colors. Then you are covered for everything you will need for a beginner to learn with.

The teacher should have picked a pattern so she could tell you what yarn and needles to buy, but since she didn't, just look at any pattern and get the yarn and needles that it suggests. Is she going to teach knitting and crochet in the same class? I don't know of any projects that use both techniques in the same project.

Most yarn departments will have little pattern booklets right next to the kind of yarn that each one calls for. In the booklet it tells you how much yarn, what kind, and what size needle. Bring everything to class with you.

Here is a basic scarf in knitting. It has needle sizes with different types of yarn.

This is a simple crochet scarf.

Start with regular yarn. I am pretty sure someone else said start with Red Heart. That is a good learning yarn. Do not start with a fun fur or busy yarn. You will not be able to see your stitches clearly and slow your learning. The fun yarns really aren't that much harder to knit or crochet with it is just easier to learn and see if you are doing it right if you can see the stitch you just made.

If you are planning to make garments, I would lean in the direction of the knitting. If you want a versatile craft go with crochet.

I too am a beginning crocheter. I have found that Red Heart makes a nice easy to use yarn. It is called a worsted weight yarn. I used a size H crochet hook.

I really like the Thick and Quick yarn as it works up faster and is easier to see. With that you will need a size K crochet hook.

go to www.liionbrandyarn.com as it has great pictures and good instructions.

Joann fabrics has a great DVD called something like Teach Yourself to Crochet. It is put out by red heart yarn. It costs about $6.99 and is fabulous!

Enjoy your class! I am so hooked on crocheting it is not funny.

PS. While you are at Joann's, buy yourself a set of crochet hooks, they are not expensive. Also, get a couple of skeins of yarn. It is fun to play with.

I'm not sure about the crochet hook, but knitting needles, probably size 8 to 10 and for the yarn, just get something simple, like no fancy frays or anything.

Usually the pattern will specify or suggest sizes.
Go to Michaels or Joannes, or wherever you buy them.
Somebody there should be able to suggest something.
