George Washinton was chosen to lead the Continental Army, and Thomas Jefferson was assigned the duty of writing the Declaration of Independence. Both men were from Virginia. How could you describe Jefferson's and Washington's assignments as POLITICAL decisions, instead of based only on their abilities?

Both men were well qualified but some politics was involved. The New England states were more committed to the Revolution than Virginia or the other southern states. Picking men from Virginia solidified the coalition of states, assured financial backing of wealthy Virginia, and made recruiting an army easier. This was political because it was an offering to the southern delegates and the legislatures that sent them.
The Declaration of Independence took some of its language from similar documents created by the states.
