Odysseus knew that when he left there was a good chance he might never return. So he told Penelope, his wife, to remarry once their son Telemachus grew a beard, because this signified that Telemachus had become a man.
With Odysseus gone for 20 years (10 years of battle in the Trojan War, 10 years spent on his journey home), Penelope starts to lose hope that her husband is ever going to return home, but she remains faithful to him. Meanwhile, she is besieged by a large number of suitors (108 of them, to be exact) who want her hand in marriage in the hopes that they might "inherit" some of Odysseus' riches and take his place as king. The fact that Penelope was said to be a beautiful woman didn't hurt, either.
She tried to delay the choosing of a potential husband among her suitors, telling them that she would choose one once she finished weaving the burial shroud for Laertes, Odysseus father, but each night she unravelled the shroud so it would never reach completion.
During all of this, in Book I, the suitors are growing impatient and behave very disrespectfully. They make themselves unwanted guests in Penelope and Odysseus' home, eating all the food and drinking all the wine, and just wreaking havoc in general. They were all of the mind that Odysseus was dead, so it was time for Penlope to choose a new husband and a new king of Ithaca.

Well think about what's happening in the story. How long has Odysseus been gone and what did he leave behind, was he considered rich or poor?
