The family of modern orchestral flutes:

Db piccolo (rare - near extinct)
C piccolo (common piccolo)
Eb flute (rare)
C flute (most common)
Bb flute d'amour (rare)
G alto flute
C bass flute
GG contra-alto flute (rare)
CC contra-bass flute (rare)

In the musical taxonomy of the family called "flutes" - there are 100s of instruments (including those above) ranging from simple ocarinas and pipes to the complex Boehm system flutes. The family includes the ethnic flutes such as the Native American flute, Irish flute, and shakuhachi of Japan among many others. The recorder is a member of the family as well.

The flutes belong to the family of "edge instruments" which belong to the family of "pipe aerophones". Oboe, Clarinet, etc... are not flutes - they are "reed pipe instruments" although they too are pipe aerophones, they are not edge instruments. It's the blowing edge that defines an instrument as a flute.
