can you fit millions of peoples personal data on 2 discs?
why was it transported this way? Why didn't they electronically transfer it?
have they not heard of recorded deleivery?

the data was encrypted, okay thats better. But still this story seems unfeasible, but makes you so sure you'd get your money back if it was stolen?

The government use internal post most of the time a bit like local councils do.
but remember this:
This is also the same government that wanted to bring in the I.D. cards hopefully now this will not happen with the complete and utter balls up of this transfere of files.
I am sure there are a lot of very worried people out there now knowing that their childrens identities, addresses ,ages and their parents names national insurance numbers bank details etc have somehow been misplaced due to governmental employees not doing their jobs to protect the british public.
Nothern rock however was down to poor judgement of the company directors when they first realised they might be in trouble they ignored it and did nothing till the bank of england had to bail them out.
Gordon brown has a lot to do if he is going to win voters round and i think he knew that with taking over from tony blair
without being voted in by the voters that if and when an election came up he would need to be more favourable i think this is why he backed out of the election challenge he knew that he would have to prove what he could do as a prime minister first so that he might keep his job if challenged.

As far as I know you can fit that amount of details on to these discs and it is an absolute disgrace. Why they used this method to transport such an amount of personal information is beyond me.Why could'nt they have recorded it or sent it Special Delivery.Another question is....With the need to move data such as this should'nt the Government vet the people who do this sort of thing instead of just handing it to Royal Mail or an ordinary courier. It is a very poor situation that a Government we elected and trusted are allowed to get away with this.I certainly will never trust a Government Department with my personal details again.

I am in the same situation as HEATHER F, in fact I am extremely P1SSED OFF! This "Government's" latest c*ock up means that 7.25 million bank accounts will be shut down! I wonder why this wasn't transported electronically. As far as I was aware of, the data wasn't encrypted, just had a basic "password". Yes, the Department had heard of "Recorded Delivery", just couldn't be @rsed to use it!

Everyones making a mountain out of a molehill here
In reality the Royal Mail screwed up and lost 2 encrypted discs with personal data on em
And lets face it, if this data did fall into the wrong hands and they stole ur money or something, your gonna get it back, the government promised earlier on that if you lose any money as a result of this ul get it back
Just chill

i could have it wrong, but I think there was only a password for each disk. besides, encrypted information can be decoded if it gets into the hands of a computer genius. I don't think it is that huge of a deal, hopefully it won't fall into the wrong hands! though, I think the way they sent information like that was ridiculous, would it have killed them to send it in a more secure way?

i reckon, it is scary to think that someone out there now knows where me and my kids live, and my bank account details. apparently the discs are password blocked, but there are hackers out there
