If tv is what she likes I would suggest finding out what movies she liked and what actors she liked and watch some of the classics with her . You will like it too and might even learn something.

Let her watch TV if she want to.Get some Enquirer and Stars magazine and read to her what the TV stars is up to . Get her some coloring books and let her relax with that. She probably can't talk to long if she has emphysema so get her a type recorder to record her memories for her family when she is not to tired. Maybe she would like to make some pot holders out of those things made like cloth bands we did as a kid. It has a frame with it. You weave the bands and it is easy. Some times you can find it at the Dollar Tree Store. Can She still play Checkers? If you can, fix her a place where she can look out the window and see the traffic or neighbors go to and from. Ask if you can get her a pet. See if someone from Church can come and visit her. They often have people who visit the inbound house people even if they didn't go to their Church. Ask her what she like to do. And see if there is anyway that she can a least go for a 30min. car ride once a month or a ride in her chair a few minutes in the yard.Get a joke book and tell them to her . But most of all talk to her like a adult. Let her listen to music from her generation and may be sing along. It don't matter if she cant talk good.

She may want to feel useful. Let her fold some laundry in her lap, peel potatoes for dinner, mending, and anything else that she can do. You could play two handed card games with her. Also family games. Many books are in large print if she likes to read. Teach her to surf the net on the computer. There are also crossword puzzle books in large print. Ask her to write her life story or dictate to you for her family. Invite other seniors to an afternoon tea now and then. If you don't know any, ask your friends or go meet some at a senior center or nursing home. I hope some of this can help. Boredom can be miserable at any age.

Since she likes TV just let her watch it. It could be that other things are exhausting. You could ask her if she would like to find a movie(s) to watch. Let her help you answer questions on YA. She could probably give some of the people in other categories some good advice and some of them are very amusing. Take her to the Marriage and Divorce, Etiquette or Parenting. Get a new email address just for you to use when the two of you do this. She may be old but she has accumulated a lot of experience and knowledge. Let her share it.

Maybe turning off the television and ask her something about herself.

Something she remembers doing during the Holiday Season. Funny or Special memories of her childhood.

Ask her about what she did for a living. How was life during the depression era.

I would also recommend watching her favourite t.v or movies.
What about the talking books from the library. You could put some head phones on her and let her listen to her favourite stories, while you potter about.

Your local library can offer a service where they deliver these talking books, just ring them up and enquire. It also costs nothing.

Ever thought of writing her life story .. keep her busy by remembering and relating things .. talk about your time on Yahoo Q's ask her for her opinion of some subjects .. how about teaching her some classic card games .. Contract whist .. Cribbage .. (My Gran loved that and would spend hours playing it) .. how about you read to her then she reads to you .. give the characters in the book personalities as you see them .. ask her about her love life .. what she thinks of today's values .. blimey there's so much to talk about and do with someone that age .. if you can't find something to suit yourself send her here, I could do with another Gran, mine died years ago and now I am a Great Grandfather .. how does she feel about being a surrogate gt gt Gran?

You can talk with her and find out about her life, I'm sure she'd love to tell you about it. Tape or write down stories she tells you and the two of you can make a scrap book with them in it. If she has photos add these to the book. You would learn more about her life and you could have fun doing this together.

Poor dear needs to get out. Have some strong men help her out to the car and take her out in the country for a drive.

Try setting up a bird table in front of the window, and watch how many different species of birds come to feed in your garden. it can be really amusing watching the daily squabbles, and their acrobatic skills. My mom is also in her 80's, and loves coming to visit us. I am sure she only comes to watch the birds in my garden, as she lives in the City, and I live in the Countryside, and we get more birds where I live.
