Actually Rudy G and the Swift Boat boys want to do just that but only in California. That way they can get a proportion share of the votes from California. Not any other state

But then where will all the electorals go after high school. They would have to go directly in to the work force. Poor little electorals.
OK, I decided to come back and add a real answer. I think it would be an incredibly smart move which is why the US government would never allow it to happen. They are scared of giving the people any real power.

Because there are more small states than big states. The electoral college favors the small states. If it was by popular vote, it would be decided by 5 or 6 states.

It balances the weight of votes between larger urban centers (who typically vote liberally), and less populated but wider spread rural areas (that generally vote conservative). Without the electoral college, Democrats would have an unfair advantage during campaigns, because their constituency is more densly congregated in fewer places- so they wouldn't need to visit as many individual districts as Republicans to get the same number of votes.

Small states have enough of a pull in the Senate to stop any such action.
Though it is certainly an antiquated system, which forces focus on a few small states. These states have more of an interest in maintaining this status quo than the others do in changing it, which is why it will not change.
