I went in for my weekly exam and came in with high blood pressure that I have never had this entire pregnancy. So they had me lay down on my left side until it came back down and the exam proceeded.
My doctor did the doppler test and then we did a pelvic exam. He got real excited that I am 2 centimeters (which I knew from previous exams) now and then proceeded to swirl his fingers around the opening of the cervix. He said that it was to "stir things up." There was a female nurse present so I know he wasn't getting his jollies off, if you know what I mean. But why would he swirl his fingers like that?
I am 38 weeks and 1 day pregnant. I have been at 2 centimeters and (as of last week) 60 % effaced. I have already lost my mucus plug about 2 weeks ago.
This is the first time I have been able to see my doctor in a month as each appointment prior I had to see the OB nurse because he was very busy with other patients. He must be a popular doctor!

Sounds like he stripped your membranes... I am not 100% sure what it is, but he like separates the membranes from the sac or the sac from the uterus a little (a little foggy here), but it's supposed to bring on labor... I also heard it may HURT and do nothing... GOOD LUCK!!!

You should always ask exactly why the doctor is doing something. He might have been trying to stretch the area to help you get ready for birth. I'm 18 weeks with #2 and with my 1st I tore real bad so my doctor and I have discussed massaging the area as a way to help me not tear this time. Good luck!

It's called stripping the membranes and is completely normal. It's sort of like causing a bowel movement by stimulating the sphincter.

It's called 'beating eggs' or something like that, it's what they do to get things moving a little faster. He may have still felt a little of your mucous plug, which is another reason he would have done it - to loosen it up.

My OBGYN doctor (female) wanted to do the same thing at 39 weeks so that it would help with contracting. She also advised me to have sex.

my dr did the same thing it helped to dilate and speed things up a bit (my middle child was 2 weeks late) I had him later that evening.

That doesnt sound right. I have had 2 children and never had that done. Correct procedure is just to insert fingers to check how dilated you are. Why are you not in hospital? Pack your bags and turn up on THEIR door and see what the midwives say. Good luck.
