Help does anybody know if it is a new flurescent tube I need (it just flashes and will not stay on) or just a starter motor? How can I tell?

If it's flashing and one end is orangish/white then it's the tube, if its just a flicker or both ends are bright, and NOT flashing then it's a starter SWITCH (not motor, they are in cars!) But for 95p or so just put a starter in as well as a new lamp.

A starter is only needed to initially light the fluorescent. Once that operation is complete the starter is no longer needed. The problem you describe sounds like you need a new tube.

Funny you should ask this question today. I just had a similar problem a few hours ago. I changed the bulbs, but It didn't fix the problem. After taking apart the fixture I found that the tombstones (the white thingies at the end of each tube) were cracked, and broken from the heat.

Try a starter motor first. only cost about £1. this is usually what's wrong when it keeps flickering
