Journalism would be a big help. English is good too. You might also need environmental studies and zoology.

Well, English with an MA in journalism would be the long route and might qualify you more for community college teaching.

I'd recommend a BA program in journalism; in particular, find a program that is specifically accredited by the Association of Educators in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) because they enforce the highest standards.

In the meantime, you'll want to use electives, or maybe do a double-major, in biology courses that focus on zoology and ecology. Also courses in geography and world cultures. And moreover, courses in wildlife management or forestry.

Note that you'll probably start your career as a writer working as a generalist--doing assignments for a local newspaper or TV news. Writing for Natural Geographic and Nature and the popular science magazines is something you'll need to work your way up to.

I'll flip everyone else's advice around. Biology, biochemisty, or environmental science and minor in English/journalism.
