I currently have 192 mb ram on my laptop, an hp pavilion ze4300. In my 2 ram slots I have a 64 mb ram card and a 128 mb ram card. So, will upgrading one of the cards to a 512 mb card greatly increase speed, or do I have to upgrade both of them to notice a change?

My question is actually, is it much better to upgrade both ram slots, or does it not matter. Like is 256, 256 mb ram better than 512, 128 mb of ram in those 2 slots, or does the ram just add up?

I would suggest using the 128MB ram, and the 512MB. Put the 512MB closest to the middle of the laptop, this is the slot closest to your processor. Your motherboard accepts a maximum of 1GB. It uses DDR at 266MHz speed. This is the Service Manual in PDF form, from HP.com, for your Pavillion Ze4300. This Pdf is 2.88Mb's, and takes 20 second's or so to download. If you don't have it, I would suggest saving it to your My Documents folder. (When you click on the floppy disk icon, it saves it there automatically!) http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00246219.pdf

Yes, upgrading your RAM will speed up your laptop either 1 or 2 slots of your RAM. Just make sure you upgrade to the correct speed or frequency of the RAM modules (e.g. 667mhz or 800mhz) that your laptop supports. Also, try defragmenting your hard disk and cleaning your registry.

It all really depends what you use it for. Going from 192 MB to 640MB will make a big difference, but I think you will find the difference much smaller if you went from 640MB to 1GB.

If you have big databases, edit large pictures in Photoshop, then the difference is worthwhile to go to 1GB, but for basic word processing, spreadsheets etc. I doubt if you would notice much.

The rule of thumb with RAM is that the more the better.

I recommend 1GB of RAM as most standard applications these days require 512mb, but its always better to have more then minimum requirements.

Hi. You will notice a difference if RAM is limiting what you do now. I think it is always better to have matched RAM sizes so you can run dual mode if your machine supports it.

Yes, you'll notice that there is a change in speed when switching back and fourth from Window to Windows...

It'll also allow you to run more Applications at once, overall allowing you to now multi-task without interruptions.

it will make a difference but speed also depends on a lot more factors such as speed of your hard drive, page file size, CPU speed and also have you kept the lappy maintained?(Defrag, scandisk, etc...)
hope this helps.
