There probably was, but "back in the day" there were no forums like this to engage in Pats (or Cowboy, or Steeler, or whatever) bashing, What went on went on in bars and such, anywhere guys (and girls on occasion) got together and talked football, but it wasn't posted in public for the whole world to see. Isn't the Internet wonderful?

Envy is a *****. As a Yankees fan, I see it everywhere. It's a short step from Envy, to Outright Awe.
People hate the Patriots, because they cannot believe how easily they've handled the teams that they're wasting their time rooting for... and I'm a Giants fan, awaiting my turn in the last week. Does this team run up the score, absolutely. Whenever you show-up the other team, you're asking for that Black Hat. The Patriots are in that role, but you still have to beat them. They are ALSO mega-money to the NFL. If they're on, people are watching (again, like the Yankees). Patriots vs. your team, you're bitching for 4 hours but you're not going to the bathroom or taking calls from any long-winded friends... right?
Each of the teams you list were great (except the Broncos). They weren't hated, they were usually feared. It's different with the Patriots. From Bellicheck and his history.. to cutie-cute Brady hardly never missing a WR (that good, AND he's good looking enough to get a Calvin Klein modeling contract offered?). They can win, without running. They can win with 40-yr old LBs. We are envious. That's just the way it is. Just like the Yankees.

The 85 Bears weren't well liked IMO, especially after that horrid rap video.
97-98 Broncos weren't well liked among teams because there offensive line were masters of the chop block. There are now rules to prevent this.
72 Dolphins are hated more recently because of there gloating, and really they didn't have a lot to gloat about. There record was perfect there level of play that year was far from it.
Cowboys are always love them or hate them, they act like a superior team, and sometimes they play like one.
Raiders have always been hated on, thats self inflicted, Al Davis feeds off it, and conditions players to play that way.
And finally, the Pats are successful. Everyone says there past is tarnished, not really. Belichick is the Davis of coaches. And personally it cracks me up. Hes like an autistic Jerry Glanville. Yes he cheated, no he really didn't get an advantage for doing it. And now he looks like a fool and deserves it. Personally, the worst story there is Mangina, thats what happens when you blame losses on anything but your own team. But honestly, I wish Belichick would stick around and give the NFL some comic relief for years, but, IMO this is his last, especially if they win it all, look for belichick to retire on his own, and Dean Pees (defensive coordinator) to be there next coach. Also the number 1 reason why Pats are hated on is not the team, probly 10% Belichick related, and the other 90% is your god awful fans, you guys could spoil it without Spygate, thanks for making what could be the best NFL team in history a downer to even look at or hear about.

I can only speak from about 1980 on - there was certainly hatred, but not to this level - but also remember, you didn't get this stuff pounded down your throat everyday like you do now, with ESPN and the internet, etc.
I'm a NYG fan living in Boston to preface this:
- I liked and appreciated the 85 Bears Defense, despite shutting out my G-Men in the NFC championship. Their offense was not impressive and couldn't play from behind.
- I liked the early 49ers (Montana, Lott, et al) but admittedly got sick of seeing them - at least NYG were able to handle them a few times in that era.
- All objectivity is lost regarding the Cowboys. As a Giant fan, what can I say - I hated them. never could figure out how they could fit salaries under the cap - very fishy. Hated Jimmy Johnson, Irvin, the O-Line, Deion. Emmitt was great, I have to admit that. They were a complete team, but I hated them like a lot of you hate the Pats now.

Since I was born in 85 and don't remember back that far, I asked my dad if there was hatred for, specifically, the 49ers (they've always been my fav NFC team). He said that they were basically loved and embraced by football fans. On the other hand, he said there was a lot of hate for the Cowboys of the 90s (which I remember, too) . Maybe it all depends on the image of the team? Could anyone have really hated Joe Montana? He was so sweet

A lot of people that I know never hated or liked the Pats...they just thought they were a good team but remained neutral until arrogant and disrespectful fans completely changed that...I seriously hate it when Pats fans say "Because we're successful..." No, it's not even the team...most everybody has upmost respect for them...it's the fans, and everybody can tell you they're hoping and wishing for a playoff loss so they can absolutely rub it in their faces...
Soon the Patriots are going to be on the losing end of games...and when the score is run up on them...no one, except for Pats fans (if there are any hardcore fans left being most are bandwagoners) is going say that was unfair...

there are only two teams i really hated, the more often than not in trouble with the law cowboys (i loved emmitt, troy, moose and novachick aka the tight end) and the 85 bears only because the beat my team in the super bowl when i was just getting in the the sport at the tender age of 6

i don't the pats i just hate the way they won or didn't win there superbowls. i mean for them to ranked in the same class as the cowboys or steelers or even the 49ers is just crazy. look at all those teams history and tradition and you can not compete in the slightest.
at least all of those great teams did it the right way i will never put the pats with those great teams

As previously mentioned, we didn't have the internet or blogs to ***** and moan about teams b4 1995. But also, the teams you mentioned we're likable teams in those eras, they didn't cheat and they didn't have the attitude that todays Pats have now. For example: the light's out dance at last years Chargers playoff game, running up the score, Belichick's standoffish attitude, late hits (Bruschi and Rodney Harrison especially). Yes, they're a very talented team and they're probably going to go undefeated but they're always gonna have dark cloud over them and that's enough for me.

There wasn't an outlet, like the internet, for so many to vent their venom, against the opposing teams before. The closest "dynasty" was 92-95, when the internet was mainly, used by geeks and few were internet literate.. now it's brought all the haters and nutcases out of the woodwork.
Everyone loves their teams, and are discouraged, by the way they are losing, to the Patriots this year... it's fueled their anger, and they take it out online.... they can't take it out, in their every day lives, or they'd end up in jail.
Go Patriots !!!!!
