I would say to re-tell the story. I've never heard re-hash used in this way though. Typically you use it if you're talking about something that has already been discussed. For example if you're fighting with a friend over the same thing over and over you might say, "Look, I don't want to re-hash all this again, can't we just agree to disagree?"

If your teacher gave you an assignment and said, Don't just rehash the plot, he means that he already knows what the story is about, and he doesn't want you to just re-tell the story. He means to address the specific topic or question he asked.

It means to summarize the plot by detailing specific events, such as rising action, climax, falling action and the conclusion. Think about the summary that a book review gives in a newspaper or a magazine.
