My dog has allergies and I have to give her shots every couple of days. I was instructed to give the needle just under the skin. Not intravenously or intramuscular. When I drew back the syringe I did not see blood, but then when I took the needle out I saw there was a tiny bit of blood in the syringe. How bad is this? Remember they are just for allergies. I'm new at this and I know it's not good to give it intraveneoiusly. please help

Just for what the first answerer said...My dog is allergic to just about everything. she is so bothered by it that she would scratch herself and give herself huge cuts. I got a $500 blood test to see, and now vaccines. It's for her own good, I don't like giving them to my dog but if it will make her feel better, it is worth it. You also can't get rid of allergies.

I was initially told she was allergic to corn wheat and soy. I found a new type of food which took forever to find, that had none of this in it. Now I found out she isallergic to pretty well everything (chicken, turkey, trees, grass, mold, dust, peas etc.) So injections seemed the best option to get her some relief. As for my vet, he is a wonderful vet and did show me how to give injections.

Were you not SHOWN how to give the shots? If your vet is that negligent I would get a second opinion on the shots right out of the box. Seems many things could have been tried first.

You probably hit a capillary in the skin. It will be fine. The needles are so small, it would be really hard to hit a vein with them!!

I had a Frenchie that got allergy shots for YEARS!!!! He was allergic to every tree, mold, and dust there was!!! The same thing happened to me every now and then. And wouldn't it be great if you could get rid of allergies with a FEW SMALL CHANGES!!!!!

Geez, your Vet can show you how to give the shots and you will NOT get blood every time when giving a SubQ type injection!!!!!! That does not mean the vet was bad!!!!!!!! ANyone that has ever had vaccines or taken their kids for vaccines would KNOW that sometimes there is a little blood after and sometimes there is NOT!!!!!!

And NO, you don't have to switch sites either!!!!! Some people have no idea, but STILL feel the need to answer the question!!!

And good luck avoiding allergies when you dog is allergic to most everything that grows near you!!!! This is NOT like a food allergy!!

My guy did very well on the injections. After a year, he was doing VERY well and had almost no symptoms.

A small amount of blood is ok. It happens. Even if the vet gave the injection, it could happen. I'm very sorry your baby has allergies. So many dogs we see at our clinic have them-- and like yours, are allergic to EVERYTHING (have had 2 dogs allergic to dog dander-- awful!)

Some owners are uncomfortable giving the injections themselves and bring the pet to the hospital for us to admin free of charge. We usually alternate injection sites- using left or right shoulder area.

oh! don't know specifically what food you tried, but Science Diet has an allergen free diet called Z/D ultra. The protein sources are different, and are "recognized" differently in the body. Of course, that would only help you for food related allergies. Your baby may have environmental allergies too?

since there was no blood when you first drew back the syringe, you know you didn't hit a vein. Remeber that when you give a shot you pierce the skin, a little bit of blood would be normal considering that you are most litterally, sticking her with needles ;) -Neb

ps- I have a basset with severe skin allergies- allergic to corn, wheat, turkey, chicken and enviromental stuff as well. We've had good luck feeding Timberwolf Organics Ocean Blue- a grain free, fish based food. it is quite expensive per bag, but if you do the math it costs me less than a dollar a day to feed because its such a high quality diet, I'd highly reccomend that over a vet's prescription diet. And Doc Ackerman's Colloidal Oatmeal Shampoo works wonders on severely irritated skin (MUCH better than other oatmeal shampoos I've found) I know you didnt ask for allergy advicce, but I figuire if it helps make her more comfortable...

you cant get rid of alergies but you can avoid them.you spent alot of money now do somting else. No as long as the blood stoped then shes ok.
You have to go to diferent areas at the back of the neck or it wont do any good.
