Why would it be wrong? I'm Irish-Canadian, I don't speak Gaelic. I know a couple hundred other Irish-Canadians or Irish-Americans, and only two speak Gaelic. Most Italian-Americans don't speak Italian. And so on....

Heritage doesn't beget language. I wouldn't spend too much time worrying about it if I were you.

Regardless of your ancestry, the ability to speak a second language with English as your primary lanauge is wonderful. Never be embarassed because you have the ability to speak more than one language, that is why people in high school and in college take language classes, Spanish, French, German, etc.

Fault? There is no fault. A student should speak English in USA but in their home, they can speak any language the family chooses.

Spanish is not the indigenous language of Mexico
they only started speaking Spanish after the Spaniards convinced them it was a good idea

I'm mexican-american and I barely speak spanish. But I still embrace my Mexican culture.
It does seem wrong.

It's no one's fault. If you didn't grow up in a country that speaks Spanish, then why would you speak it ?

Do black Americans speak Swahili? Do white Americans speak German or French or whatever there great-great-grandparents spoke?

I wouldn't worry about it.
